If you lived through the 80s, you recall the elite Brick cellular phone by Motorola. Developers with 80s nostalgia release the Retro Brick Bluetooth Handset. If you lived through the 80s, you probably recall the ever so elite Brick cellular phone from Motorola. Back in the 80s, you had to have some serious cash (and clout) to have a DynaTAC. Well, a small team of product developers with some 80′s nostalgia, recently designed the Retro Brick Bluetooth Handset, modeled after the DynaTAC “Brick”.

The Retro Brick Handset is a wireless Bluetooth handset. Standing at an eye catching 13″ tall, the Retro Brick will start some conversations –whether you’re walking down the street, or it stands on your desks. What’s more, it weighs much less than the original DynaTAC, which means it’ll be comfortable to hold.  It also won’t heat to an inferno like the original.

Here are the features:

  • Makes and receives calls in high quality digital audio.
  • Backlit keypad allows users to place calls directly from the handset.
  • Built-in speakerphone allows users to talk hands free.
  • 8 character alphanumeric LED display for an authentic look.
  • Bluetooth will pair with iPhone, Android, or any other compatible mobile phone.
  • Can also be used as a VOIP Handset, so you can even make Skype Calls from the Retro Brick!
  • Use it as a home phone, desk toy or fashion accessory.

Of course, in respect of the 80’s, the Retro Brick is available not only in Classic white, but also in 4 neon colors: neon yellow, neon green, neon blue and hot pink.

I love this concept not only because the 80’s rock, but also because the project is being funded through Kickstarter, a crowdfunding site. Kickstarter is the worlds largest funding platform for creative projects (isn’t it amazing what a collective can accomplish?).

There’s only one catch:  Kickstarter is a unique all-or-nothing funding method where projects must be fully-funded or no money changes hands. That means if you want to see someone sporting a Retro Brick down the street, you’ll need to contribute to it’s production!

Here’s what’s awesome: 100 super early adopters can contribute $85 towards production and lock in the Retro Brick in Classic White!  If you don’t have that kind of cash to spend but you want to bring the 80’s back, you can donate a lesser amount to get anything from bragging rights to a t-shirt.

Funding ends August 12, 2012 with the first round of Retro Brick’s shipping in November, just in time for the holidays! So if you want to make it happen, you can get your Retro on at Kickstarter. Learn more about the development team (led by a husband and wife!) here.
