Google Preserves History as it Carves Out the Future

Posted by Jesse Braunstein on December 20th, 2011

It seems like Google has got just so much to offer that hardly a day goes by when the company doesn’t roll out something new.

In the last few weeks in particular, Google has been offering so much, so fast that it’s been tough to keep up with all the news, so here’s a quick recap:

It’s recently done a lot of design changes to all its interfaces, making them increasingly modern and unified. Then Google came out with signigcant changes to Google Analytics, including a real time feature. We also saw improvements to Gmail, such as personal message display preferences. Google also wanted to get the ball rolling on the online music business and even introduced Google Music, with the classic tagline “Set Your Music Free”. Additionally, it’s unveiled an analytics service for its daughter company YouTube.

Wow they’ve been busy!

But what I feel is the mark of a truly great organization is not only their urge to push forward, but also an effort to pay homage to where they come from.

Engadget reported that Google has done exactly this, by donating $850,000 “to renovate Bletchley Park…the former home of…the British Government’s Code and Cypher School…[Alan] Turing, its most famous alumnus went on to pioneer computer science and artificial intelligence.”

Google took the time out of its busy schedule of service releases and enhancements to give charitably to an organization that produced a mind without whom; their own organization would have never existed.

This is an important message for all of us.

For those of us who work in a specific field, take the time to really keep the start of that field alive by learning and reading about its history and its important figures.

Additionally, none of us would be where we are today without the guidance of our parents and it’s important to remember in this holiday season, to take the time out of our cram-packed lives to spend time with our parents and grandparents and thank them for all they have done for us.

Great job Google and happy holiday’s readers!
